INSPIRATION. the Siren’s Song: Mermaids have always enchanted us, perhaps because they remind us of our atavistic connection with the otherworldly depths of the ocean, where our species’ ancestors swam and frolicked eons ago. And there is nothing quite as freeing as that first plunge into the sea. Something about this mysterious world and these mystifying creatures draws us in, as if trying to reclaim us from the mundane cares of the lands we have been exiled to, like the sirens who lured sailors with their seductive songs.

 My favorite myth about mermaids is the story of Thessaloniki of Macedon, the sister of Alexander the Great, who had obtained a flask of water from the Springs of immortality for her. When her legendary brother died, the disconsolate Thessaloniki threw herself into the Aegean Sea, but was transformed into a mermaid instead of drowning. For centuries afterward, whenever she encountered mariners anywhere on the seven seas, she asked them if Alexander the King still lived. If they answered ‘He lives and reigns and conquers the world’ she would calm the seas and let them pass. If they gave any other answer, she would invoke a storm and send them to a watery grave. The Greek word πνεῦμα (pneuma) refers to the breath of life. The eye of Ra is the feminine counterpart of the Egyptian sun god, a powerful protective symbol and source of strength,  a combination of the air and fire breath elements that animates our spirits. Sun breath and the sea.. three powerful medicines for the human soul :)
