THE SHARK (NEW, IMAGES TO FOLLOW)
Hand-sculpted Shark pendant.
ABOUT: Sharks have haunted our culture in various ways for centuries, but for many seafaring peoples, these powerful beasts were not just regarded with fear and horror, or as Jaws-like villains, but as divine protectors and guardians of the deep. The ancient Hawaiians venerated nine different shark deities, and the people of the Marshall Islands had a different sacred shark for each tribe, sort of like a patron saint. Many of these island cultures, such as the Solomon Islanders, believed in benevolent shark spirits that protected fishermen and swimmers. Sharks were also seen as shapeshifters and mysterious tricksters who could assume human form. This custom, limited edition pendant is for lovers of the ocean, and for those who can identify with the shark’s solitary freedom and fearlessness, with the relentless and obsessive pursuit of a goal- for the hunters among us. The greek word κηδεμόνας, which means ‘guardian’, was chosen to represent the shark’s role as a wakeful protector.
The pendant is part of the limited number series (only 500 will be made and each piece will be numbered in the back).
