THE YEAR OF THE BOAR
THE YEAR OF THE BOAR
Hand-sculpted “boar with golden bristles” pendant.
INSIPIRATION: In the Chinese zodiac, the sign of the boar (also translated as the pig) represents carefree, easy living and good fortune. Wild boars are easygoing creatures unless they or their young are threatened, which can make them fiercely protective.
This dual nature is why the boar was seen as an emblem of courage and prowess in the Celtic and Greco-Roman traditions, but symbolized docile good nature in Imperial China.
In many cultures, the boar was also associated with honestly and stubborn independence. On top of the Boar, I hand-lettered the Hanzi character for independence and self-reliance.
I added the sun because the boar also has a very ancient tradition as a sun symbol, particularly in Norse and Germanic myth. One of my favorite examples is Gullinbursti, the giant boar who draws the chariot of the Norse sun god, Freyr. Gullinbursti’s gleaming golden bristles illuminate Freyr’s path across the heavens’ representing the sun’s rays.
The Boar is part of the limited number series (only 175 will be made and each piece will be numbered in the back).
